An artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) is a small, implanted device that restores urinary control for men experiencing leakage after prostate surgery, trauma, or prior reconstruction. Urinary incontinence can affect confidence, relationships, and quality of life, and for many men, the AUS is the gold-standard solution when conservative treatments no longer work. The specialists at The Institute for Advanced Reconstruction are able to successfully perform AUS implantation, even in complex revision cases.
The AUS mimics the body’s natural urinary control mechanism through three internal components:
- A cuff placed around the urethra to keep it closed,
- A small pump placed discreetly in the scrotum, and
- A fluid reservoir implanted inside the abdomen.
When you’re ready to urinate, press the pump, opening the cuff and allowing urine to pass normally. After a few minutes, the cuff automatically refills, restoring continence.
Our surgeons perform AUS placement using advanced nerve-preserving techniques, ensuring comfort, safety, and natural function.
