Dr. Tsai completed his undergraduate studies at New York University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude with Honors in Biology. He then went on to attend Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson for medical school and spent a dedicated year performing translational research at Harvard Medical School, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Dr. Tsai completed his plastic & reconstructive surgery residency training at Yale under the mentorship of Dr. John A. Persing. There, he learned the full spectrum of plastic surgery including pediatric craniofacial reconstruction, aesthetic surgery, microsurgery for limb salvage and oncologic reconstruction, brachial plexus reconstruction, peripheral nerve surgery, targeted muscle re-innervation, hand & upper extremity surgery, and melanoma surgery as part of Yale’s Melanoma Unit, founded and led by Dr. Stephan Ariyan.
Dr. Tsai went on to complete orthopedic fellowship training in hand, upper extremity, & microsurgery at St. Luke’s Mount Sinai C.V. Starr Hand Surgery Center (the former Roosevelt Hospital) under Dr. Michael Hausman. During his time there, Dr. Tsai acquired a wealth of knowledge in upper extremity care, mastering orthopedic principles and techniques for fracture management and reconstruction of the hand, wrist, proximal forearm, elbow, and humerus, including minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques.
Dr. Tsai has traveled extensively throughout his medical and surgical training, visiting world renowned experts at numerous institutions including the Mayo Clinic, NYU Langone and Bellevue, Montefiore, the Buncke Clinic, and Curtis National Hand Center. He has published several peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters during his career, with a focus on hand surgery, microsurgery, burn care, and plastic surgery. He is an active member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) and the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM).
