September is Sexual Health Month

Sexual Health Month

This month aims to bring awareness to sexual health, including both the physical and emotional aspects of sex. For many, this subject can be embarrassing or awkward to bring up to your physician, as well as your family and friends. The objective of this month is to get rid of the stigma surrounding discussing sexual health.

At The Institute for Advanced Reconstruction, one condition we treat is called Pudendal Neuralgia. Pudendal neuralgia (PN) is a term meaning intense pain in the area in and around the pudendal nerve, which is located in the pelvic region and carries sensory and motor fibers. The pudendal nerve stems from the sacrum and runs through the pelvic area into the urethra, anus, rectum, perineum, and genitalia. PN is caused by the entrapment, compression, or dysfunction of the pudendal nerve.

Besides pelvic pain, Pudendal Neuralgia often causes intense pain during intercourse. Some patients have had to stop all sexual activity, leading to feelings of despair and causing strain on their relationships.

Our pudendal neuralgia specialists, surgeons, and staff here at the Institute for Advanced Reconstruction understand how difficult it is to live with this condition, as well as others relating to sexual health and function. We are here to support you every step of the way. If you think you are suffering from Pudendal Neuralgia, please contact us today to speak to one of our intake coordinators.
