When Others Say 'Live With It'—We Offer Real Solutions for Pelvic Pain

Pudendal neuralgia is the intense pain in and around the pudendal nerve located in the pelvic region, commonly known as the “sitting area”.

Entrapment, compression, or dysfunction of the pudendal nerve triggered by trauma to the area due to cycling, childbirth, surgeries, squatting exercises, biomechanical abnormalities (e.g., sacro-iliac joint dysfunction, pelvic floor dysfunction), chronic constipation, repetitive vaginal infections, or falls on the tailbone, can cause pudendal neuralgia in both men and women.

Without treatment, symptoms may worsen starting with a small amount of perineal discomfort and eventually progressing into a chronic and constant state of pain that does not decrease even when standing or lying down.

Pudendal neuralgia can be very complex and difficult to treat because of the location of the pudendal nerve and its functions, which is why Pudendal Nerve Decompression Surgery is an option that is usually considered after more conservative therapies fail.

At the Institute for Advanced Reconstruction, we are experts in complicated nerve procedures. Using a minimally invasive surgical procedure for Pudendal Nerve Decompression, many of our patients are either symptom-free or with a significant relief of symptoms after recovery.

Consultation for Pudendal Neuralgia Decompression Surgery: Is it right for me?

It is important to note that pudendal neuralgia is largely a “rule-out” condition. In other words, because its symptoms can indicate several other problems, extensive testing is required to ensure that a different condition is not the source.

In addition to eliminating other conditions, it is important to determine if the pudendal pain is caused by a true nerve entrapment or other conditions related to compression/tension. Testing overseen and analyzed by The Institute for Advanced Reconstruction physicians will help to determine if the symptoms are caused by true nerve entrapment.

  • Have you been diagnosed with pudendal neuralgia?
  • If so, when were you diagnosed (month/year)?
  • Are you experiencing pain when sitting down and in constant pain even with standing or lying down?
  • Can you pinpoint your pain? This will help determine if it is in the area innervated by the pudendal nerve.
  • How long have you been experiencing your pain?
  • Were you exercising intensely, sitting long hours, had been in an accident, had a vaginal delivery, pelvic surgery, or pelvic infections?
  • Do you have Lyme’s disease, multiple sclerosis, or colorectal cancers?
Have questions, need more information, or would like to find out if our pudendal neuralgia surgical procedure is right for you? Get in touch with us today.

About
The Institute for
Advanced Reconstruction

The Institute for Advanced Reconstruction is uniquely positioned as the ‘go-to’ center for revolutionary nerve procedures, as well as world-class reconstructive treatments.

These include cutting-edge procedures such as nerve transplantation that may restore a significant degree of function for those who have suffered from stroke and other forms of paralysis. Patients who at one time believed they had exhausted their paralysis treatment options come from around the country and the globe to our practice in New York City and Red Bank, New Jersey.

The Institute for Advanced Reconstruction is also composed of the Axon Advance Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on new horizons in research, innovation and surgical treatments for peripheral nerve damage and spinal cord injury.

Frequently
Asked
Questions

What is Pudendal Neuralgia?
Pudendal neuralgia is a condition that manifests as intense pain in the area in and around the pudendal nerve, which is in the pelvic region and carries sensory and motor fibers. The pudendal nerve stems from the sacrum and runs through the pelvic area into the urethra, anus, rectum, perineum and genitalia. Pudendal Neuralgia is caused by the entrapment, compression, or dysfunction of the pudendal nerve.
What are some common symptoms of Pudendal Neuralgia?
The most common symptoms are burning, numbness, increased sensitivity, stabbing or aching pain, abnormal temperature sensations.
What conservative treatment methods exist for Pudendal Neuralgia?
Before surgery, most patients try conservative measures such as lifestyle changes, pelvic floor physical therapy, medications and nerve blocks.
What happens if Pudendal Neuralgia goes left untreated?
If left untreated, Pudendal Neuralgia can progress from minor symptoms, often beginning with bladder issues, and progresses gradually as nerve damage worsens.
