Shrewsbury, NJ — The Institute for Advanced Reconstruction (IFAR) is proud to share that Dr. Matthew Kaufman has been named one of NJBIZ’s 2025 People to Watch in Health Care, a recognition that celebrates innovators, healers, and change-makers who are shaping the future of medicine across New Jersey.

This honor spotlights professionals whose contributions—often behind the scenes—are having a profound impact on the health and well-being of the state. The annual list highlights individuals who, while not always household names, are pivotal to the success of their organizations and the advancement of patient care statewide.
“It’s a meaningful acknowledgment not just of Dr. Kaufman’s surgical expertise, but of his dedication to transforming lives through advanced reconstructive solutions,” said Dr. Andrew Elkwood, CEO of The Institute. “His work exemplifies IFAR’s mission to lead where others follow.”

Pioneering in Phrenic Nerve Surgery
Dr. Kaufman is internationally recognized for his pioneering work in phrenic nerve reconstruction, a rare and highly specialized procedure used to treat diaphragm paralysis. He remains one of the only surgeons in the world performing this life-restoring surgery, and to date has conducted over 500 successful phrenic nerve procedures.
His expertise has drawn patients from across the country—and around the globe—seeking care that is often unavailable elsewhere. At IFAR, Dr. Kaufman leads with both surgical innovation and deep compassion, aligning with the Institute’s commitment to treating complex conditions with precision and empathy.
