Patient Regains Hand Function Following Complex Reconstructive Procedure

SHREWSBURY, NJ – MAY 27, 2010 – The Plastic Surgery Center today announced the successful results of a complex reconstructive surgery performed by Dr. Russell Ashinoff to repair a man’s injured hand. Following the two-stage procedure, Mr. John Johnstone reports that he has regained full function in his left hand, which was severely damaged in a November 2009 wood-cutting accident.

Mr. Johnstone commented, “As a New Jersey State Trooper for the past 24 years, having the use of my left hand is critical to the success of my job. I am thrilled with the results of the surgery, which has allowed me to return to my daily activities.”

On November 29, 2009, Mr. Johnstone suffered fractures, severed tendons and lost part of a finger in his left hand as a result of a backyard wood-cutting accident. A resident of Manasquan, New Jersey, he was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey for emergency surgery. During the procedure, Dr. Ashinoff utilized advanced reconstructive techniques to re-attach the tendons and rebuild Mr. Johnstone’s hand. After the initial surgery in November, Dr. Ashinoff performed a second procedure in April 2010 to remove the remaining scar tissue, completing the process that successfully restored function to his hand.

NJ Father Prepared in Hyperbaric Tank for Complex Reconstructive Surgery by NJ Medical Team

SHREWSBURY, NJ – November 25, 2008 – The Plastic Surgery Center today announced that Dr. Andrew Elkwood, M.D., a world renowned plastic and reconstructive surgeon, along with a NJ medical team rebuilt a 48-year old man’s lower lip to restore normal speech capabilities. The team also reconstructed the patient’s thumbs using remnants of bone and skin from his chest and groin areas.

Before and after the procedure, which took place at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, the patient was placed in a hyperbaric chamber to prevent the risk of post-surgery limb loss, common among those who have undergone radiation treatment.

As a young child, the patient contracted Hodgkin’s disease and had his spleen removed. He was then treated for mouth cancer as an adult. Last year, the former weightlifter lost his legs, arms, and lower lip within 24-hours after developing Overwhelming Post-Splenectomy Septic Syndrome (“OPSS”), an acute infection and side effect of spleen removal. Dr. Elkwood and his team were able to rebuild the patient’s arms and hands by using excess chest and belly tissue.

Dr. Elkwood is part of the medical team at the Plastic Surgery Center, which is comprised of a group of surgeons who are highly skilled in nerve transplantation and advanced reconstruction. They perform a number of unique operations to help patients suffering from life-altering medical conditions who are often unaware that a treatment is available. NJ SURGEON PERFORMS COMPLEX FACIAL RECONSTRUCTION ON PALESTINIAN BOY INJURED IN BOMB EXPLOSION

Palestine Children’s Relief Fund Brings Child to U.S. Surgeon to Provide Advanced Surgical Procedure Required for Patient

SHREWSBURY, NJ – May 30, 2008 – The Plastic Surgery Center today announced that Dr. Andrew Elkwood was selected by The Palestine Children’s Relief Fund to perform complex facial reconstruction on a Palestinian boy injured in a bomb explosion.

The procedure, which took place earlier today at Monmouth Medical Center, was performed to rebuild 17-year old Baha Sleem’s face damaged by a bomb four years ago in the Old City of Nablus. After losing his eye and much of the orbit surrounding the eye, a medical team led by Dr. Elkwood utilized advanced technology to take Baha’s ribs and use them to rebuild his face.

The patient had already received multiple procedures in the Middle East, but required reconstructive surgery to rebuild his facial structure and eye orbit to hold a prosthetic eye.  In order for him to receive the specialized surgery needed, The Palestine Children’s Relief Fund brought him to the U.S. to have this complex procedure performed by Dr. Andrew Elkwood.

Some of these conditions that the Plastic Surgery Center treats include:

  • Paralysis resulting from accidents and strokes
  • Diabetic Neuropathy
  • Paralyzed diaphragm/ventilator-based breathing
  • Facial Reanimation

The Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF) was created over ten years ago as a nonpolitical, nonprofit humanitarian organization to help arrange free medical care abroad for injured and sick Palestinian children during the first uprising. Since then, it has provided hundreds of children with free medical care not available to them in the Middle East. The PCRF is continually bringing needy children to the United States, Europe, and other parts of the Middle East to provide them with the specialized and lifesaving surgeries that they desperately need.
